Stress and Anxiety

Stress & anxiety are the root of many chronic health problems

When we experience stress our bodies respond with a cascade of chemicals designed to help us be alert and primed to deal with the situation. In prehistoric times, when the human stress response evolved, stressful situations generally required us to react aggressively to a threat or to run away. Our bodies still respond the same way, although those responses are not usually appropriate to the stress we experience on the Tube or in the office. Stress accelerates our heart and breathing, increases blood pressure, inhibits our sexual response and slows down digestion and the bowels.

How we will help you

Stress & anxiety are complex, and we all have our own ways of reacting. At the New Medicine Group, we have 300 years of experience between our 15 expert practitioners, and we can offer a range of therapies based on your needs and preferences. For example: acupuncture, mindfulness, herbal medicine, provocative therapy, counselling, acupressure, somatic experiencing.

If you're not sure what would be best for you, call us on 0845 6769699 and we can help you find the treatment for you.

The earlier you address stress or anxiety, the better. Long-term exposure to stress can cause health problems like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), low libido, insomnia or broken sleep, back, shoulder or neck pain, tension headaches or migraines, high blood pressure (hypertension), skin problems, weight gain or loss, fatigue, jaw pain, reproductive problems, immune system suppression (frequent colds, flu or infections), and emotional symptoms such as mood swings and depression.

Prolonged stress may result in chronic suppression of the immune system, leaving the body open to infections. When stress is accompanied by fear or worry, we experience anxiety. Prolonged anxiety can lead to panic attacks, phobias, palpitations, headaches, sexual problems, digestive problems and other symptoms.
